Brooklyn Kura and Hakkaisan are working to make Japanese sake a beverage loved by people all around the world.
In 2021, the Hakkaisan Brewery Group established Hakkaisan Brewery USA as an affiliated American company in Brooklyn, New York. The Group also signed an agreement to provide operational funds to New York’s first sake brewery, Brooklyn Kura, which was founded by two Americans. Based out of Brooklyn, this newly established brewery plans to start operations in fall 2023 with several Hakkaisan Brewery staff stationed locally to provide support for sake brewing operations. Brooklyn Kura’s approach is using locally grown rice and locally based workers to make sake for consumption by locals living in and around Brooklyn. Furthermore, Hakkaisan Brewery and Brooklyn Kura hope to add craft beers, distilled liquors and fermented food products to the product lineup in the future through joint development efforts.
Brooklyn Kura is also taking measures to disseminate sake-related knowledge and promote greater interest in the beverage. One vital component of these efforts is their sake taproom: In this new space, customers can enjoy high-quality sake on tap while learning more about the culture, culinary aspects and history behind Japanese sake in an all-encompassing, integrated manner. The taproom’s educational program was developed by, and is carried out by, Hakkaisan Brewery Global Brand Ambassador Timothy Sullivan.
